TOBACCO THERAPY
TOBACCO THERAPY
Nicotine - delivers nicotine via patch or gum. Not as effective as other options, but cheap and simple
Varenicline (Chantix) - decreases cravings. 1st line therapy. MOA is identical to that of Buprenorphine (partial agonist with strong affinity), except Varenicline binds to Nicotinic receptors instead of µ receptors. It keeps the receptors happy without giving you that buzz. Black box for cardiac stuff. Rarely causes acute psychiatric stuff
Bupropion - less effective, but good with comorbid depression. In addition to its NDRI properties, it’s also a weak nicotinic agonist. Can’t use it with epilepsy, eating disorders, anxiety.
