STATUS EPILEPTICUS

Nonstop seizin’

Status Epilepticus is when a seizure lasts for a long time (the exact threshold is debated, but anything longer than 5 to 30 minutes). This is a medical emergency - their brain is cooking. You must abort the seizure ASAP.

What medications can stop an ongoing seizure?

Benzos, benzos, benzos and then some more benzos (for example lorazepam). This will “cool off” their brain. Second line treatment with Fosphenytoin works too, but don’t get fancy, just use benzos.
